# Importing and Exporting

File exchange between OSB and MT5 is simple and effective

Working outside of the MT5 terminal can take some adjustments, and with all the benefits of organised storage, annotation and configuration assistance, the transition is worth it.

OSB works with json based files, a far superior format to the flat text based .set files. A richer set of metadata is stored that adds value to trading configuration files, and enables cross EA version evaluation and use.

However, in order to remain compatible we convert the OSB json files to .set when exporting, and from .set to json when importing.

### Exporting OSB files

To export a setfile, open the required setfile from the Vault and click <i class="fa-up-right-from-square" style="color:$tint;">:up-right-from-square:</i> from the top icon menu.

The current setfile configuration will be extracted and a .set file will be saved to your machine's designated download folder.

Open your MT5 terminal, and you can Load the downloaded .set into a live chart or a back test inputs tab.

Remember if you are loading the setfile for Live trading you will need to input your Private Key.
{% endhint %}

Give the file a final check before using.

### Importing set files to OSB

If you have set file configuration changes you have made in the MT5 terminal, likely as part of strategy testing, you can import these into OSB for safe keeping and re-use later.

Save the set file from MT5 into a folder you can easily access from OSB.

Open OSB and click on <mark style="color:$primary;">`Import`</mark> from the Setfile Vault.

The Drop Zone importer will display. You can either click the button to browse to your file, or you can drag and drop the .set file in directly.

If the file is valid, it will be converted to json format, uploaded and saved into your OSB vault. You should now see the new imported file in your Vault list. New imports have a status of <mark style="color:blue;">`Import`</mark>

You can now select the file and annotate and categorise it appropriately so it's safe for re-use later.

It is important to note, that if you edit an exported setfile in MT5 and then re-import that setfile, a new setfile will be created. You cannot update an existing setfile config.

***To keep a setfile in sync, you will need to manually update the version in OSB to MT5. See*** [***Hydra Fingerprints***](/products/hydra-fingerprints/hydra-fingerprints.md)
