# Back Test Analyzer

Visualize your back test performance like never before

The Back Test Analyzer is available to all traders through the portal. This is a repository where you can store important back test results for detailed analysis, comparison or even portfolio suitability.

## Generate Back Test exports

In order to use any of the Analysis tools, you will need to enable **Export Backtest Report** in the setfile. This can be found on the Backtest tab of the setfile, under Settings.

{% hint style="success" %}
We strongly advise all backtests use Every tick based on real ticks modelling. Whilst this is slower due to the volume of tick data, the results and performance will be more accurate than the faster 1m OHLC setting.
{% endhint %}

## Retrieving the Backtest JSON file

Backtest report files produced by Hydra Vision are stored in the Terminal\Common\Files\ folder. To get there from MT5, press Ctrl+Shift+D (File > Open Data Folder). This opens your terminal's own data folder, not the Common folder: go up one level to Terminal, then open Common\Files.

Open the hydra\_exports folder, and select the folder named with your Broker Account number. Every MT5 Account will have its own folder.

You will see all the json files located in here, ready to be uploaded into the portal.

{% hint style="info" %}
When browsing to this location from the portal, if you haven't setup a shortcut you will need to browse from the root to:

C:\Users\\\<user>\AppData\Roaming\MetaQuotes\Terminal\Common\Files\hydra\_exports\\\<account>
{% endhint %}

### Import the Backtest

Open the Backtest Page from the portal, and click on <mark style="color:$tint;">`Upload`</mark>

Browse to the file location, and select the test to upload

Name the test (you can change this later if needed), and click <mark style="color:$tint;">`UPLOAD`</mark>

The file will be parsed and saved, you will now see the backtest as a card.

### Setfile Linking

At this stage, the most important thing to check is if the Backtest was successfully Linked to a setfile. If you made adjustments in MT5, then there would be no available setfile to link to. To check, click the <mark style="color:$primary;">`View Detail`</mark> button, and the Test Panel will be displayed.

The Setfile matching status is shown at the bottom of the panel:

1. **Unmatched** - No setfile version in OSB shares this backtest's Strategy Print. Click on <mark style="color:$tint;">`Unmatched`</mark> and a popup will display, allowing you to Generate a new Setfile from the settings recorded in the backtest.
2. **Exact Match** - A setfile version with the same Strategy Print and Tuning Print was found and linked. The Setfile will be named for your reference
3. **Strategy Match** - A setfile version with the same Strategy Print was found and linked, but some tuning differs. Use Compare to see which settings differ.
4. **Chosen** - Several setfile versions shared the Strategy Print, and you picked the one to link yourself
5. **Generated** - If you generated a setfile from the backtest. A generated setfile carries the same Strategy Print and Tuning Print as the backtest

For what each print covers, see Hydra Fingerprints.

### Tagging

In the Backtest View Detail panel, you can access the Tagger. You can select different categories and tags for your backtests, for easy searching, sorting and filtering.

### Notes

In the Backtest View Detail panel, you can access the Notes. You can write up any details about the backtest you may want to recall at a later stage.

### Sorting and Filtering

When you have many backtest reports in your repository you can use the filters and sort options to find the test you want to analyze. You can filter by Symbol, Strategy Print / Tuning Print or Tags.

There is also an option to sort the tests using the dropdown in top menu bar.

## Backtest Report Viewer

On each backtest there is a blue <i class="fa-file-html" style="color:blue;">:file-html:</i> icon. Clicking this will open the Report Viewer in a new tab. The viewer will display your backtest data in an easy to read format.

## Backtest Compare Viewer

To compare up to 5 backtests, click Compare in the Backtest Card. When at least 2 have been selected, the Compare Menu will highlight in the Right hand panel.

Click compare to launch the Compare Viewer in a new tab. The viewer will display the selected tests in an easy to understand tabular view.

## Portfolio Viewer

Compare different Assets for possible pairing in a portfolio mode. It is important to note that the tests should run in the same date range and with the same data modelling quality. Do not try compare the same symbol, this is not the intention of Portfolio Viewer.

Click Portfolio in the Backtest Card for at least two tests (up to eight). The Portfolio Menu will highlight in the Right hand panel.

Click Portfolio Analysis to launch in a new tab. The viewer will display the selected tests in an informative overlay. Please note you may want to test the same symbols in a few different date ranges to ensure you get a consistent Portfolio analysis before making a Live Trading decision.
