# Glossary

Every term from the panel inside the portal, plus the ones the report shows but doesn't define.

### **Band compression**

The share of the asset's natural step range that spread and commission have taken off the bottom. Zero means costs cost you no range at all. Anything above about a third means your options are meaningfully constrained. → [Band compression](/products/asset-profiler/band-compression.md)

### **Carry**

The cost of holding a position overnight: swap, in plain terms. Called carry throughout the report because it's treated as a running cost against your budget rather than as a separate line item.

### **Carry pressure**

Whether overnight cost is heavy enough to make a wider step worse rather than better: the wait at the wide end of the range divided by the days of carry that equal the entry cost. Below 1, what you pay at entry dominates and wider is cheaper. Above 1, carry usually takes over by the wide end and a real best step appears. Pressure predicts this; the recommendation itself appears only when the measured cost curve turns inside the range. → [Recommended Step](/products/asset-profiler/recommended-step.md)

### **Carry runway**

How many days of overnight cost your budget allows. Unlimited on a swap-free account. Worked out at the cheapest step in the sweep (the recommended step when one is shown, otherwise normally the widest step tested) rather than at the band floor, where it would always be zero. → [Carry](/products/asset-profiler/carry.md)

### **Cost at entry**

Spread plus commission per lot for one round trip, charged the moment you open, before price has moved. → [Cost at entry](/products/asset-profiler/cost-at-entry-and-the-cost-budget.md)

### **Cost budget**

The share of the profit target you've agreed costs may consume. Spread and commission are drawn from it first; what's left pays for holding. Shown as the three-colour bar under the top tiles.

### **Cost share**

Everything you pay (spread, commission and accumulated swap) as a fraction of the gross profit the step earns. The main figure plotted on the chart, and the most comparable number between assets. → [Cost share across the band](/products/asset-profiler/cost-share-across-the-band.md)

### **Cost tolerance**

How much of the profit target you're willing to let costs consume. The default is 35%. It appears in the badge at the top right of your report alongside the profit target: `cost tolerance 35% · target 35%`.

### **Economic optimum**

The step where widening stops helping. Reported only when it's real, which needs carry heavy enough to bend the cost curve back up. On most assets the curve falls all the way, so the cheapest step is the widest by arithmetic, and no step is named. → [Recommended Step](/products/asset-profiler/recommended-step.md)

### **Ladder fill factor**

Positions in a grid open at different times, so later ones carry less swap. The fill factor converts a per-position daily swap into the average across a whole ladder. Default 0.667.

### **Minimum step**

The smallest price gap the engine allows between two positions. The thing the Profiler exists to help you set. Called *step* everywhere in the report.

### **PCL**

The Hydra Vision close engine (Profit Closes Loss). The Profiler models its simplest case: the most profitable position viably clearing a losing position on the anchor side of the grid.

### **Practical step range**

The span of step sizes this asset can support. The ceiling comes from how much the asset moves; the floor from whichever is higher of the movement floor and the cost floor. The report shows it converted into `Minimum Step Size` on the line directly under the range. → [The practical step range](/products/asset-profiler/the-practical-step-range.md)

### **Profit target**

How much profit a close aims to take, expressed as a share of the step size. The default is 35%, so a 20-pip step aims for 7 pips.

### **Retrace needed**

How far price has to come back for a two-position close to finish in profit: the distance from the frontier position to the pair's average price, plus the profit target, plus every cost. → [Retrace](/products/asset-profiler/retrace-how-far-and-how-long.md)

### **Session cost**

How much the spread differs between the Asian, London and New York sessions. Descriptive only — every other figure in the report uses the all-session average, so this is the one lever the report leaves entirely in your hands. → [What the session costs you](/products/asset-profiler/session-cost.md)

### **Setting unit**

The unit Hydra Vision reads `Minimum Step Size` in, chosen by asset class: one pip on FX, one cent on gold and other commodities, one whole point on indices, and 1.0 (or 0.01 under a price of 100) on crypto. Not always a pip. → [Ticks, pips and price](/products/asset-profiler/ticks-pips-and-price.md)

### **Step curve / the sweep**

The seven step sizes tested across your range, with the retrace, wait and cost share measured at each. Shown as the chart and the table at the bottom of the report.

### **Tick**

The smallest price movement a symbol can make. The Profiler's internal unit, because it behaves consistently across every asset class. Not the same as a pip — see [Ticks, pips and price](/products/asset-profiler/ticks-pips-and-price.md).

### **p80 wait**

How long the retrace took in four cases out of five. The number to plan against; the median is the comfortable case rather than the realistic one.
